It was such a joy to listen to this tonight (esp. Playin-Crazy Fingers- jam-) thanks grendel for motivating me to do so. Kind of a wild experience after these past weeks soaking up E72 !
Fun spot for Touch, and this recording is quite impressive too:

(ps. Hey you’re in VT, have you ever checked out Jatoba? )

The first set is out of this world good (-FFM). Phil's walking bass line pumping Minglewood up, which is a scorcher version. An impassioned Sugaree w/ strong Garcia vocals and guitar. It's just so good through tunes I steer clear of, but don't here Rooster & TJed. I am not a fan of Cassidy, but this one is just beautiful. Loser is Aces. This is how crazy good this first set is. LLR works, and gets better and better as the song moves on. Killer Phil and Bobby. The China-> Rider is one of the reasons why I follow this band.

Great pick & eye on the TDIH grendel.

edit- Check out the last three songs as well. The Sugar Mags just won't stop and you don't want it to. Bobby is on fire. And then the best double encore? Certainly of the last half.

Not a fan of Cassidy? How is that possible?

Hey Pat...

I agree--how could one not be a fan of what is possibly Weir's best song?

anyway, I was gonna save this suggestion for TDIH tomorrow, but here's a "sneak preview"...my favorite all-time CASSIDY--just a sick jam section, perfectly played rendition...this one really builds to a frenzy and has that "just exactly perfect" touchdown as well:

PK, I've just burned out on the song, which is fairly recent b/c I used to love it. The lyrics are a home run, but the arrangement just doesn't do it for me anymore. That middle jam bores me to tears.

grendel, PITB & TOO are titanic Bobby songs. I would argue a few miles higher then Cassidy. I get off more to Mexicali Blues, both penned and arranged by Bobby. (I'm a polka nut.) Gonna check out that Cassidy later. Maybe it will be like a two-by-four up the head.

cool man. i wasn't trying to be too critical. i just think that cassidy is one of those quintessential GD songs. but who am i to talk? i would skip over almost any dark star for almost any jack straw!

Well, this evening I had the time and inclination to listen, and don’t know if I had heard this show before. I’ve now gone back to the first set and agree with most of what you say, but I do believe the scorching Far From Me blows that silly little Red Rooster right off the page!

if you are referring to the song, imo it is one of the more embarrassing of the DEAD covers.

I would completely agree, except for this one. Maybe this show just turns my key. ;-)

IMO, Satisfaction is saved by Brent's keen work. Bob's approach to the lyrics is unimaginative and laborious.

Howwevah, Baby Blue is very special. Jerry's solo is quite delicate especially considering this was an outdoor venue. He also has a very clear voice on this night....must be that cool, Fall, Bay Area air.

I'm going to have to listen closely to Brent next time. I agree w/ v that Satisfaction is on par w/ Baba O'Riley. It's the dynamics on this one that just work for me. Something riotous and totally free.

Baby Blue is darn near perfect.

What a show. What a week-end.

For Vapors:

Not familiar w/Jatoba...which venues in VT do they frequently play?

Glad you liked the Frost show!

Hey grendel – Jatoba is based in Brattleboro. Upcoming shows @ the Hub in Johnson VT on 10/28, and Barnaby’s Halloween show in Rockingham on 10/29. You can get a sample taste on their website (jatobamusic.net), also some songs to stream on reverbnation. There are some shows here on the archive with varying audio quality. They released their first professional studio cd this past spring – Death, Fire and Picnic Tables. I really dig their sound and style.
